Mindfulness Perthshire

Providing mindfulness and compassion training for groups and individuals
Mindfulness
Our minds wander all the time, either reviewing the past, ruminating in the present or planning for the future. Mindfulness teaches you the skill of paying attention to the present by noticing when your mind wanders off. Come back to a focus of a felt sense, like the breath or sound.  It is a place where you can rest and settle your mind.

Robust research shows that mindfulness helps us cope with stress  more easily, focus better, improves sleep and our relationships with others.

Compassion
Compassion is a way to respond to ourselves and the world with kindness and care. Training in compassion enables us to open our hearts without becoming overwhelmed. Compassion cannot be fatigued, it is too much empathy that can cause stress and burn out.  Self-compassion is an important part of really understanding what compassion is and often when we start training in compassion we realise how uncompassionate we are with ourselves. Self-compassion has a growing evidence base that it is a much  healthier response than constantly comparing ourselves to others or berating ourselves.

Training in compassion enables our ability to stay present in each moment as Jon Kabat-Zinn says, even if it is, "a moment of pain, despair, sadness or fear.”

Mindfulness Practice Groups-
suitable for both beginners and those with experience of mindfulness. Practising mindfulness
in a group offers  a real way to practice meditation keeping it alive and reflecting on both the challenges and benefits . The support of the group and the connection with each other can be the water that encourages practice to grow and blossom.

The Guesthouse - by Rumi
This being human is a guest house
Every morning a new arrival,
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
Some momentary awareness comes,
As an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
Who violently sweep your house
Empty of its furniture,still,
Treat each guest honourably,
He may be clearing you out
For some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
Meet them at the door laughing,
And invite them in.
Be grateful for whoever comes,
Because each has been sent
As a guide from beyond.

What We Do
Cat offers group and individual sessions in local communities and to organisations in and around Perthshire.
Group Courses
MBLC
A course developed by the Mindfulness Association with the intention of helping people bring mindfulness and compassion into daily life. An eight week course, sessions are two hours long. Some home practice is expected.

Mindful Self-Compassion
Developed by Chris Germer and Kristin Neff, leading experts in the field, this eight week course introduces compassion and self-compassion through a series of exercises, talks and exploring the blocks and difficulties that get in the way. Classes are two and a half hours long, some home practice is expected.

MSC online
A shortened online version, condensed into six weeks of ninety minute classes or in-person workshops.

Healing Relaxation
Developed by Akong Rinpoche who founded the Samye Ling monastery in Eskdalemuir. He developed Tara Ropka Therapy in collaboration with a group of therapists. This introduces deep relaxation  techniques with their origins in Buddhism and Tibetan medicine. Face to face and online.

One-to-One Sessions
Sometimes, for a variety of reasons, it can be helpful to explore the practice of mindfulness in a one to one setting. This is not therapy, but rather a shared exploration of the process of mindfulness and any obstacles that may arise. The exploration may also include compassion/ self-compassion.

Deepening Practice
Bespoke. Training targeted at focusing on particular aspects of mindfulness. These are often shorter courses of four to six weeks.

Practice Days
Cat provides regular practice days as a way to allow deepening of practice. And strengthening local communities of practice.

Mindfulness Supervision  for Teachers and Trainers
As part of good practice guidelines, mindfulness teachers are expected to receive regular supervision. Mindfulness supervision is an exploratory process between two teachers.   The supervisor is more experienced and through this experience can support and inspire teachers to grow in their confidence and skills. Sessions can be thirty to sixty minutes and small group supervision is also available.
